Rank Recommendations

Progression in rank promotions is not soley based on the ability of a student to meet the requirements listed below.  It is Ryukoku Honbu's belief that advancement in Karate accounts for a whole person concept and suggests the dojo Senseis consider other factors such as good behavior, a spirit of effort, good school grades for the young students, and good conduct in the dojo and community.  Ryukoku Honbu does not dictate class length or freuqency, but realizes every dojo is unique.  As a guide to developing strong Karate and enabling students to progress with regular training, however, a recommended training week should include attendance as a minimum with:
     Adults--two 2 hour classes.
Children at 4th kyu and below--two 60 minute classes.
Children at 3rd kyu and above--two 90 minute classes.

Special Note about Children: Beginning at 4th kyu, recommend that sparring replace Self Defense Techniques for children under the age of 15.  Basic and advanced street self defense techniques are best saved for adult classes.

Board Promotion System:   A new system has been developed by RSKKR's Technical Advisers to be used at local dojo, regional, and national belt promotion tests.  It is a principle-based Karate test that bridges the gap between the different dojos.  Click here for details.

Note A:  For Sandan and above, testing of Yakusoku Kumite, street self defense, and/or Toide techniques are individualized based on the student's strengths.

Note B:  For testing to Godan and above, promotions are individualized, based on personal and personal expertise and service to the Seidokan community.
